Guidelines for the conservation of leather and parchment bookbindings
Until recently, the Guidelines for the Conservation of Leather and Parchment Bookbindings, published by the Koninklijke Bibliotheek in collaboration with the Centraal Laboratorium/Instituut Collectie Nederland (now Rijksdienst Cultureel Erfgoed) could be found here.
Over the past years, the KB has critically evaluated these Guidelines. In the process of revision, questions were raised about the effectiveness and side-effects of the methods of treatment and the products described in the Guidelines. Recent research has confirmed the doubts with regard to the treatment and its effectiveness. Until these issues are resolved, the KB can no longer recommend the Guidelines. They will no longer be used in the treatment of bookbindings in the KB collections either. The findings and questions that have led to this point of view may be found in a publication ‘Herziening Richtlijnen Leerconservering’ [Dutch only].
